The Triennial (Previously Now + There)

Boston Public Art Triennial – the city’s first and only public art organization dedicated to supporting artists and communities in presenting bold contemporary public art that opens minds, conversations, and spaces, resulting in a more vibrant, open, and equitable region. Our annual programs Lot Lab and the Public Art Accelerator find and foster artists and communities, while serving as feeders to a culminating city-wide Triennial public art exhibition. The first Triennial will happen in 2025 and every three years thereafter. The best part is that it’s open to all.

Our mission is to foster relationships between artists and the public to create bold public art experiences that open minds, conversations, and spaces across Boston, resulting in a more open, equitable, and vibrant city. Out vision is that Boston Public Art Triennial will become recognized locally, nationally, and globally for presenting public art as a critical catalyst for open community engagement, equitable social change, and a contributor to the cultural and economic vibrancy of a city. Why a Triennial? Because Boston, not unlike other cities in America, suffers from a prevailing narrative that it is an economically, racially, and culturally closed city. The Triennial’s mission changes that story through annual public art commissions and a focused citywide experience, a triennial, every three years.

The Accelerator
The Public Art Accelerator is a skill-building and grant-funding program designed to support early-to-mid-career Boston-based artists in creating temporary public art projects in Boston neighborhoods. Launched in 2018, the 30 graduates of the Accelerator are working in the community, creating dynamic and thoughtful projects, and helping change the narrative of our city and region. During Triennial years, Greater Boston artists are invited to participate in the Accelerator at Lot Lab.
