School of Contemporary Art (SOCA)

SOCA is an alternative learning program started in 2015. Independently, we provide support to local artists and students who want to further learn about and explore tactical approaches to contemporary artistic practices. We provide a platform for intellectual exchange and critical dialogue about creative mindsets in collaborative settings alongside the artistic community.

Run by self-funded artists (and sometimes in collaboration with galleries and art spaces), SOCA has done 4 regular online programs and artist talks up to now including art workshops and exhibitions. In these workshops, SOCA invites and highlights international artists mostly from cross-media or multidisciplinary backgrounds. Currently, SOCA is active primarily on social media and regularly shares a wide range of approaches and new media art with the public.

SOCA exists at the intersection between local and international art scenes, thus we initiate the knowledge sharing process with our virtual platforms for sharing multimedia art. Our goal is to build up the ethos of our artist community into a developed fulfilling new culture. Our new project, “The Documentation project of Myanmar contemporary Art” (Vol 3) is currently ongoing. It was granted a public exhibition for NYC’s Goethe Institute’s “Re-connect” program in 2021.

Featured Project

Initial Museum of Contemporary Art Myanmar (“IMoCA”)
IMoCA is a Virtual Museum for the forerunner of a physical one in the future. There is no modern or contemporary art museum in Myanmar/Burma, but there is a lot of interesting Myanmar artists. If there were to be an art museum, what would it be like? What types of art would it show to whom? Can those arts revive the rich heritage of Burmese art? What should be the sentiments and representations of Myanmar? Does Myanmar need a modern or contemporary art museum and how should be called it? This project addresses these questions. IMoCA Myanmar is first endeavoring ideas for a virtual art museum and making a database archive of contemporary art practices in Myanmar while the country is under nationwide scattered situations and various challenging of social-upheavals. We wish to create a new platform and database for current local and diaspora artists of Myanmar, to re-introduce international art networks and to reunite for future collaborations. IMoCA Myanmar is operated by the artist network of “School of Contemporary Art project Myanmar (SOCA), alongside other organizations and organizers.
