KERFEW

KERFEW is a collection of DJs, artists, radio hosts, photographers, illustrators and graphic designers who are shining the light on South Asian excellence across Australia’s artistic scene.

While united as a collective, each member embraces their unique cultural identity, sharing personal stories and experiences that intersect with their communities and artistic practices. Their primary platforms include regular community and cultural events, DJ sets for local or fundraising purposes, and a radio show on the community station AREA3000. On the show, the crew engages in podcast-style discussions, blending music with reflections on how their identities shape their artistry. For instance, Deepa Alam and Iti delve into the experience of being Muslim in the music industry, particularly performing during Ramadan. In another episode, Kāmna reconnects with her mixed cultural heritage, exploring Telugu and Malayalam classics and the influence of Tamil music in her family home.

Featured Project

KERFEW Radio
Fridays, 4-6 PM (monthly) on Nomad Radio (previously AREA3000). A curated monthly radio episode featuring a special guest who uses art as a vehicle to explore, reimagine and celebrate the cultures and stories that are shaped by the uniquely Australian South Asian diaspora experience. Episode description via Instagram, September 2023: “This month, @scalymoth69 dives into the faster, clubbier, bass-heavy side of things. Expect a mix of South Asian artists from across the globe, alongside music from Palestine and the SWANA diaspora. Swipe for an extremely long tracklist — we’ve got everything from techno and traditional percussion to trap, and even a little DnB as a treat.”
