HAWAPI

HAWAPI is an independent cultural association that develops encounters for multidisciplinary artists in politically complex territories in order to conduct research and develop interventions in public space. By bringing artists into dialogue with communities, environments and contexts beyond the circuits of contemporary art, HAWAPI seeks to encourage participants to grapple with the complexities of place.

After each encounter, HAWAPI creates opportunities for artists to share their perspectives with different audiences, through exhibitions, events, public conversations and publications. HAWAPI exposes artists to spaces that directly engage with specific social, economic and/or environmental struggles in order to encourage a more profound understanding of issues that shape society and to broaden the interpretations of them in the work they produce.

HAWAPI 2021 – Labor Esencial
In 2021, in response to the COVID-19 health crisis, HAWAPI developed a project based on collaborations between workers from the arts with workers from other labor sectors. Through these collaborations HAWAPI hoped to encourage reflection and generate conversations about essential labor and the place of artistic practice in times of crisis.
